Cornelius - Like A Rolling Stone - SlowDownMix.

Sensuous opens with Oyamada revisiting one of Point's main techniques: composing songs with the individual sounds kept clearly separate. His fascination with the hi-fi stereophonic demonstration records of the 1950s and 60s- the ones that presented the full range of the stereo spectrum through whirring, buzzing sound experiments- finds its full and rewarding realization here, but in function more than form.

Sensuous is the fifth studio album by Cornelius. It was originally released in 2006. It peaked at number 8 on the Oricon Albums Chart. In the United States, it was released via Everloving Records in 2007.

Cornelius' Sensuous starts off with the title track, a simple guitar offset by its own reverberations until it finally decays. Its simplicity belies the rest of the album, a flood of cheeky Japanese pop. Mostly, it's been cut-up and made discontinuous, as in "Fit Song," the printer-inspired and -sampling "Toner," and the more rock-oriented "Gum. But "Breezin'" stays true to its name, a warm, easygoing trip, and "Wataridori" is a cleverly layered guitar exercise.

This album is definitely for those who like to travel outside the mainstream. This album was crafted with great method and a vision that most just wouldn't give the time to understand. Every time I go back to this album, it keeps on giving; as I hear nuances that didn't stand out to me the listen before. Cornelius is a true definition of the word artist, who else could craft the obtuse and abrupt sounds of a printer printing into a sound scape of wonderment (In the track "Toner"). But even lesser Cornelius is better than most music, and while "Sensuous" may be his weakest work, it's still a beautiful piece of work. Definitely worth listening to - just don't compare it to "Point.

Still, with all the influence of old, Sensuous sounds like an incredibly modern album; it sounds like something that might come out of Japan. Cornelius’ way of making music combines so much from so many different spectrums that it is unheard of and brand new. This is good. Sensuous is Oyamada’s first album in four years. A cultural cornerstone in Japan, his popularity saw no decrease and sold extremely well upon its release.

With Sensuous, he creates a more contemplative space with an ambience that is definitely directly descended from Point, but not a slavish follow-up. Opening with the title track, the tone is thoughtful, yet playful; guitar figures flirt with smooth, bland ambience but never succumb to torpor. He's so adept at structure and tempo that just when you think you are being led down a blind alley you find a treated guitar part fizzing off into the distance, ending with a wonderful piece of playing where the tune collapses into itself.
