Roxy Music are an English rock band formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry, who became the band's lead vocalist and chief songwriter, and bassist Graham Simpson. Alongside Ferry, the other longtime members were Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion).

The Early Years", I have always found it a bit difficult to enjoy early Roxy Music as I do the later & Bryan Ferry. This time, after being more convinced about their importance and very high respect in art rock genre, I nearly succeeded: I thought yeah, this is clever, witty, original, quirky, parodic, etc and not so difficult to digest as I thought before Even if The Early years is composed exclusively of songs from their first three albums (. their best), something is always missing when I hear it. It is like cutting pieces from a painting and puting together the chosen ones into a new frame, got it? It might sound ok for the casual listener and still he wont see (or hear) the real, complete thing.

Roxy Music is the debut studio album by the English glam rock band of the same name. It was released on 16 June 1972  . Roxy Music, particularly the album's LP incarnation, has been released in different packages over the years. The album's original cover, as issued in 1972 by Island Records, featured a gatefold sleeve picturing the band (including original bass guitarist Graham Simpson) in stage attire designed by Antony Price, and did not include the track "Virginia Plain".

This album is the biggest selling Roxy album to date. The title track, "Avalon" (c/w new song "Always Unknowing") was released as a single reaching number 12 and "Take A Chance With Me" in the top 30 were the last Roxy releases during the life of the band. The Avalon tour took Roxy on the road right up until May 26th 1983 finishing in Philadelphia. News of the bands split hit the press as differences within the band had brought Bryan, Phil & Andy to the end of their collective activities. An album compiled from their first 3 albums simply titled "The Early Years" was released in 2000 with much of this music being relevant and influential to many of the contemporary artists of 2000. Roxy announced their planned reformation and forthcoming world tour in a press conference in The Savoy in The Strand (of all places) in February 2001.

Not that music was Roxy Music’s sole concern. Still astoundingly modern today, Roxy Music remains not only one of the finest debut albums in history, but rock music’s first true postmodern masterpiece. Startling both in its simplicity and in the way it cut against the grain for rock and pop albums of the early 70s, the Roxy Music album cover came across more as a fashion shoot than a sleeve for a vinyl disc.

There are two Roxy Musics – and our 10 deals only with the first, those abrasive musical insurgents, not the smooth balladeers of later years. As mission statements go, the very first Roxy Music song on their self-titled debut album couldn’t be any more effusive or less idiosyncratic

Roxy Music didn’t have the level of mass hysteria that T. Rex generated in their homeland, but they were just as influential. In 2005, The Guardian’s Tim de Lisle went as far to call Roxy Music the second most influential British band after The Beatles: Somehow, in a landscape dominated by Led Zeppelin at one end and The Osmonds at the other, they managed to reach the Top 10 with a heady mixture of futurism, retro rock ‘n’ roll, camp, funny noises, silly outfits, art techniques, film references and oboe solos. The band set out early on to be original, and with their first album, Ferry and Eno were front and center of the art-rock movement in the early 1970s. Their debut was produced by King Crimson co-founder and lyricist Peter Sinfield. Producer: Peter Sinfield.
