That’s the classic definition of ambient music, stated by Brian Eno in 1978 on the sleeve notes to his album Ambient 1: Music for Airports. And he should know, since he basically invented the genre three years earlier with his album Discreet Music. Ambient is now used to describe all kinds of music, from tracks you can dance to all the way to harsh noise.

Right now, actual ‘muzak’ or elevator music is so hard to find that it would probably sound interesting if you did. Perhaps in 1978 it was something that needed to be opposed. It’s interesting that Eno’s ambient has a punk/post-punk date, and the very starkness and self-discipline of some of his (and others’) ambient LPs give them an affinity with the stark punk/post-punk of Magazine, Gang of Four et al. The word ‘ambient’ comes from the Latin and means ‘going about’ – from ‘iens’ going, and ‘ambi’, about. It’s interesting that Eno’s use of the word ‘ambient’ has also been adopted (by writers and DJs, compilers of LPs, etc) to claim that records made before 1978 were also ‘ambient’.

At that moment the notion of youth, both as a culture and a demographic, was born; it defines our culture now to a degree that we no longer question. In the transition, rock'n'roll has lost much of its power to shock and to galvanise, has become both fragmented and ubiquitous. The end of the hippy era. 1969 The Stooges' first album is released. The greatest and most influential garage band ever, Detroit's the Stooges made stripped-down, dumb and dirty rock'n'roll like no one else. Fronted by Iggy Pop, the most outrageously self-destructive showman rock has yet thrown up, their debut album, though dismissed in its day, remains the template for punk rock in all its manifestations, from the Sex Pistols to the White Stripes. The 70s. 1970 Black Sabbath release their first album. Music for Airports is Eno's first experiment with the notion of ambience - modern mood music.

The music of the Aughts was all over the map in the very best way, with file sharing and randomly produced personal playlists encouraging eclecticism and experimentation in both artists and listeners. Rolling Stone‘s list of the decade’s 100 best songs – which was originally unveiled in 2009 and was compiled by a group of over 100 artists, critics and industry insiders – includes garage rock revivalists, dance-happy indie, sassy starlets, slick modern R&B, boundary-shattering pop hybrids and a few familiar icons from previous eras.

Before I press play: Kinda weird that Old Town Road is on the album twice. Also why is the remix first but the original last. Also I've seen some people complaining that all his songs are short, like that's inherently a bad thing. Small songs can be really good at getting a point across in one direct hit. I:E; Jack Stauber and Tierra Whack. After Listening: Unironically Great.
