The songs are connected with each other and even got some influences from the funk music of that time. 180 gram audiophile vinyl. More MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA. Mahavishnu Orchestra have been cited many times as a big influence on everyone from King Crimson and Frank Zappa to The Mars Volta. Frontman and guitarist John McLaughlin has always been the main figure in the band, both during their first (1971-1976) and second line-up (1984-1987).
As the second album to document the second Mahavishnu Orchestra, this one isn't as, well, apocalyptic as its predecessor, yet it does focus more intently on the band itself.
The Essential Mahavishnu Orchestra (with John McLaughlin). Original Album Classics: Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Unusually though this album has a very rough production and a very muddy mix. Overall Visions Of The Emerald Beyond is a very tame, almost safely constructed album missing the fireworks that were the trade mark of the early Mahavishnu Orchestra yet it still good enough to warrant a purchase. Can't stand your funk". Visions of the emerald beyond" is the second album by the reformed Mahavishnu Orchestra, and thus the second to feature violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. Recorded in New York over a period of just 11 days, the album has a welcome diversity and energy which contrasts well with the first line up's work.
