It's an impressive set, slickly moving between string-laden lo-fi R&B ("Hives"), atmospheric experimentalism (the intense but beautiful "Chagall"), James Blake-ish eccentricity ("Parakeet") and leftfield dancefloor pressure ("B Shf L"). The origins of the thoughtful nature of Kwes' music are perhaps hinted at by his background. With a CV that includes working with The xx, remixes for Hot Chip and gigs with Jack Penate and Ebony Bones, Kwes (born Kwesi Sey) made the decision to go full time with his 'free pop' whilst studying. He says I was in and out of London a lot and the quality was slipping on both sides so I had to make a decision. I knew I wanted to do music because I of course loved it and was starting to get somewhere with it, so I had to make the jump.

The album opens with a host of its most pop-friendly tracks, going from the controlled chaos of "Purplehands" into the brilliantly icy and painfully lovelorn standout track "3. kwes. taps into the same nostalgic, adoring melancholia that James Blake has perfected on these tracks, singing softly sorrowful vocals bathed in moody reverb over minimal but distinctively digital backdrops.
