Beatles by the Album. It’s a film about stealing The Beatles’ songs, so it’s not surprising moviegoers are asking if the surviving members of the band show up in Yesterday. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr play themselves in the film. They are, however, definitely aware of the movie. Yesterday follows a struggling singer-songwriter (Himesh Patel) who wakes up and discovers that he is seemingly the only one who remembers The Beatles. By passing off their hits as his own, his career skyrockets. The Beatles are very much aware of the movie, though. Yesterday director Danny Boyle was worried about upsetting the men and the widows of George Harrison and John Lennon. He wrote them letters to tell them his plan.

After recording a few Beatles tracks, Jack begins to generate a buzz. There’s a nice cameo from Ed Sheeran, who spots Jack on Norfolk local TV and invites him to be his supporting act on tour. Sheeran takes the piss out of himself with good grace here, admitting that he is Salieri to Jack’s Mozart. His songs are the most downloaded ever. The film is a reminder of how much a part of our lives The Beatles are. When I became a parent, their songs were among the first I played. My toddler sings the Nana na naaa! from Hey Jude in her buggy. It’s impossible to imagine a world without them. The film wouldn’t work with another band. And Yesterday has an anti-celebrity message too. Now that he’s megafamous, a shadow hangs over Jack.
