The London Bach Society was founded in 1946 by Paul Steinitz who, at that time, was organist of St Peter’s Church, Dulwich Common.

In January 1947 Paul Steinitz, a free-thinking organist and conductor, set out to liberate the composer's music from the oppressive weight of numbers usually employed by English choral societies. Paul Steinitz OBE (25 August 1909 – 21 April 1988) was a pioneer in the post-war interpretation of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
