Joined by guest musicians from the Balkan region, Savall traces the cycles of life, structured around the four seasons of the year and the corresponding seasons of human life.

Jordi Savall i Bernadet (Catalan: ; born August 1, 1941) is a Catalan conductor and viol player. He has been one of the major figures in the field of Western early music since the 1970s, largely responsible for popularizing the viol family of instruments (notably the viola da gamba) in contemporary performance and recording. His characteristic repertoire features medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music, although he has occasionally ventured into the Classical and even the Romantic periods. Hespèrion XX favored a style of interpretation characterized simultaneously by great musical vitality and maximum historical accuracy. 2013 - Bal·Kan: Miel & Sang (AVSA9902). Marin Marais (AVSA9903).

Honey & Blood: never was there so apt a metaphor! So much richness and drama packed into such a small area is guaranteed to fire the imagination of historians and artists, especially musicians. Title: BAL·KAN: Miel & sang (Honey & blood) - Savall. Description: Singers: Meral Azizoglu (Turkey); Irini Derebei (Greece); Gürsoy Dinçer (Turkey); Lior Elmaleh (Israel); Montserrat Figueras (Spain); Tcha Limberger (Belgium/Manouche) Marc Mauillon (France); Amira Medunjanin (Bosnia); Stoimenka a (Bulgaria); Agi Szalóki (Hungary); Zacharias Spyridakis (Cyprus). In three SACDs and two programs entitled Honey and Blood, and The Cycles of Life, the latter based on an original idea by the regretted Montserat Figueras, whose sublime voice we here hear with great emotion, it is to a vast musical epic that we are invited, at the heart of which memory plays an essential role, as Jordi Savall himself states: Music.

Bal-kan: Honey & Blood - Cycles of Life. Savall has brought together leading musicians from all over the Balkan Peninsula to explore this musical landscape and to celebrate and lament in the true Balkan spirit. Bands from Macedonia, Serbia and Rumania, Hungary and Turkey join members of Hespèrion XXI, bringing an exotic diversity of instruments: the Sephardic ney and oud, the Macedonian kaval and gadulka, the Tzigane bracs and cimbalom, all combining with that eastern-European staple, the fiddle. The music itself is as much a mosaic as the peoples of the Balkans; Orthodox, Catholic, Muslim, Gypsy and Sephardic cross-currents merging.
