It’s really an album-oriented album. With beats, vibes and ideas flowing freely, they wrote and recorded Scream in just six weeks. Setting the tone, the drum machines and sleek electronica of the opening track, ‘Part Of Me’, revealed that Scream was a Chris Cornell album of a different stripe. Timbaland’s beats and atmospheric backdrops offered Cornell fresh vocal challenges, but he rose to the occasion in style on tracks as demanding as the lithe, Sly Stone-esque ‘Time’, the soul-tinged ‘Sweet Revenge’ and the cinematic ballad ‘Never Far Away’.

Near the end of his set, Chris asked the audience whether or not we wanted to hear some tracks off the, then upcoming, Scream album which resulted in a loud roar. Cornell and the crew proceeded by performing Part Of Me and then followed it up with Scream. To be honest, Scream sounded great live and Part of Me was a tad mediocre. The songs were still very rock centric and Chris was screaming his lungs out. Last week, Scream, the Timbaland produced follow up to Cornell’s 2007 Carry On, was released and we’ve finally taken a listen to the album

Scream, Chris Cornell's third album as a solo artist and, most notably, produced and co-written with Timbaland, one of the two or three producers entirely responsible for the sound of the last decade. How did such a masterpiece take form? By 2009, Timbaland's decadewas almost over. But Cornell was dancing. In the music video for Scream's second single, "Part of M. Cornell sits, contemplatively attractive, while he watches couples in cities like El Paso and San Juan energetically dance with each other, their legs dizzily moving like thatches on a ripped up plaid. The cities chosen, notably, are historically more diverse than Cornell's hometown of white-bread-eating and dancing-in-place Seattle. Musically and visually, Cornell positions himself as the sexy interloper, hoping his mouthwatering good looks will get him into the party.
