As the mythical follow-up to Pet Sounds, it delivers, and despite his age, Wilson's voice even sounds fantastic, still carrying the weight of these angelic melodies. As the mythical follow-up to Pet Sounds, it delivers, and despite his age, Wilson's voice even sounds fantastic, still carrying the weight of these angelic melodies.

The set focuses on abandoned recording sessions from their unfinished 1966–67 album Smile which – if completed – would have followed the group's 11th studio album Pet Sounds. It features comprehensive session highlights and outtakes, while the first 19 tracks comprise an approximation of what the completed album might have sounded like.

The white whale of '60s record-making, the Beach Boys' aborted SMiLE album gradually gained a legend that not only inflated its rumored importance and complexity, but gave credence to an odd notion - that completing it, then or ever, was impossible. In truth, SMiLE should have been released and forgotten, reissued and reappraised, and finally remastered for the digital era and ushered into the rock canon ever since Brian Wilson halted work on it in May 1967 (after an exhausting 85 recording sessions)

Brian Wilson Presents Smile (also referred to as Smile or the abbreviation BWPS) is the sixth studio album by Brian Wilson, released in September 2004. It began as a series of concert performances which were later adapted for a 2005 direct-to-video concert film of the same name The project was originally conceptualized in 1966 as Smile, a studio album recorded by the Beach Boys and written in collaboration between Wilson and lyricist Va. .

Smile was the album that broke Beach Boy Brian Wilson, one of the greatest songwriters of the 1960s. Now, 45 years on, the dozens and dozens of recordings made in the now almost legendary Smile Sessions are being released. In 1966, the Beach Boys released Pet Sounds and set a new benchmark for innovative pop music. The Beatles took notice. A year later, Wilson, the sensitive songwriter behind most of their hits, set out to create something an even more adventurous Beach Boys album. It was to be called Smile but it was never released. Wilson still bears some of the mental scars.

Summary: Well, better 37 years late than never. Originally intended to be the Beach Boys' 1967 follow-up to their legendary 'Pet Sounds,' 'Smile' was finally recorded as originally intended in April 2004 by Wilson and his current band, including co-songwriter Van Dyke Parks. Record Label: Nonesuch.

Brian Wilson : SMiLE. It was to be Brian Wilson’s American answer to the grandiose work of the Beatles overseas. It was to be the Beach Boys’ greatest album to date, surpassing even the sonic tenderness that was Pet Sounds. But instead of becoming what it was meant to be, it was lost. And if you think that sounds like Lord of the Rings, you’re not too far off.

In interviews to promote Smile, Brian Wilson has concentrated on the happy, humorous qualities of the music, which are evident. However, there is also a clear and beautiful melancholy in Brian Wilson's voice and throughout the album eg. on 'Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine' and 'Surf's U. The lyrics to 'You Are My Sunshine' have been altered to past tense, adding a reflective somberness.
