Cold Fact is the debut album from American singer-songwriter Rodriguez. It was released in the USA on the Sussex label in March 1970. It is notable that while the album sold very poorly in the United States (Rodriguez was himself an unknown in the States), it managed to sell well in both South Africa and Australia without Rodriguez himself even knowing. In 1971 the album was released in South Africa by A&M Records, who were by then the owners of the Sussex label. In 1976, several thousand copies of Cold Fact were found in a New York warehouse and sold out in Australia in a few weeks
Imagine an above-average Dylanesque street busker managing to record an album with fairly full and imaginative arrangements, and you're somewhat close to the atmosphere. Rodriguez projected the image of the aloof, alienated folk-rock songwriter, his songs jammed with gentle, ess, indirect putdowns of straight society and its tensions
Sugar Man, won’t you hurry, ‘cause I’m tiredof these scenes. Dipped sweetly in the psychedelia of the sixties, this the first album from a mysteriously unknown artist, mingles simplyfolk guitar with astonishing lyrics about drugs, depression and inner cityblues. Rodriguez’s distinct nasal voice ambles through a dozen simpletunes addressing the turbulent backdrop of America in the sixtiesand does so with such impressionable beauty that it has catapulted himinto cult status in many far flung corners of the globe

Rodriguez released "Cold Fact" on 1970. It received little to no attention in the US. Why this album was treated indifferently is a mystery. But perhaps what is even more remarkable, is the fact that Rodriguez was building a huge following in South Africa. There, he was idolized even more than Elvis Presley. You literally couldn't go anywhere without finding a copy of "Cold Fact" in somebody's record collection. One of the main things that makes this album a true classic is the topics that it brushes up on. Rodriguez grew up around the rough parts of Detroit. A lot of the struggles he and his peers face are often reflected on this album. But this album also revolves around the topics of love, poverty, break ups, and jealousy. He somehow manages to fit all of these topics into the album without any song feeling misplaced. Cold Fact is basically the life of an average Joe living in 70's Detroit.
