In 1988, Bright Lights, Big City was adapted as a major motion picture, for which McInerny wrote the screenplay. The film was directed by James Bridges and starred Michael J. Fox, Kiefer Sutherland, and Phoebe Cates. Narrated in the second person perspective by a nameless aspiring writer, the story begins in Manhattan. Soon, he becomes disillusioned with Amanda’s materialistic values and the fast-lane lifestyle of New York itself. The narrator hits rock bottom toward the end of the novel when he blacks out in a singles bar in the Upper East Side. Bright Lights, Big City is Jay McInerney’s debut novel. He has since written four standalone novels, including Ransom, Story of My Life, The Last of the Savages, and Model Behavior.
