The book accompanying the television series Alistair Cooke’s America sold almost 2m copies. And Cooke became a household name in the US as host of television’s Masterpiece Theatre. If journalism was his life, America was his beat. From his first visit on a Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in 1932, he never really doubted where his heart lay. Alistair Cooke KBE (20 November 1908 – 30 March 2004) was a journalist and broadcaster. Born in England, he became a naturalized American citizen. Even the prospect of early annihilation should not keep us from making the most of our days on this unhappy planet. In the best of times, our days are numbered anyway.
