Toward the Within (1994) is the first official live album of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard's group Dead Can Dance. It contains 15 songs, of which only four appeared on their previous albums, and two of which were later re-recorded and included on Lisa Gerrard's first solo album, The Mirror Pool. The others previously existed only in live performances and unofficial bootlegs, but were not officially released until Toward the Within

A large reason that Dead Can Dance tours and performances were so praised by hardcore fans lay in the band's welcome preference for unknown and otherwise unheard material, rather than simply rehashing expected numbers. Bootlegging of these tracks and performances was understandable and widespread, so involved and passionate was the band's following. Recorded at a Los Angeles performance from the Into the Labyrinth tour, the astounding Toward the Within shows that the band's magic was clearly not simply something created in studio
Dead Can Dance’s first live album, Toward the Within, isn't a live set in the traditional sense. Though it was recorded in one take during a performance at Santa Monica’s Mayfair Musical Hall in November 1993, the setlist isn't a recitation of the band’s greatest hits. Only four of its 15 songs appeared on prior albums, making it clear that the band were focused on using the stage to do things they couldn’t generate in the studio.
Toward the Within" is the first official live album released by Australian/UK world music act Dead Can Dance. The album was released in October 1994. Toward the Within" was recorded in one take in November 1993 in the Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica, California. In addition to the two members of the band, Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, the album features several guest musicians including Brendan Perrys brother Robert Perry (on percussion, flute, guitar). Toward the Within" was also released as a VHS/DVD. Toward the Within" is overall an excellent live album release by Dead Can Dance. Dont expect rock star attitudes or anything like that this is a much more subtle and introvert type performance. There are no talking between tracks for instance and my guess is that the performance is timed down to seconds.
