Although Francis Poulenc never placed his piano works among his greatest achievements, he thought highly of them and regarded them collectively as a self-portrait. That this is an accurate assessment is shown most clearly in the Trois mouvements perpétueles and the Trois Novelettes, where Poulenc's humor and sentimentality are shown side by side in equal measures
French pianist Gabriel Tacchino was a student of Poulenc and has made that modest master's piano music his own. Piano Melodies is a compilation of recordings made between 1966 and 1985, plus a couple of new recordings made by Tacchino in old age: the opening "Les chemins de l'amour," from the incidental music to Jean Anouilh's Léocadia, and the "Rustique" movement from the Sonata for piano four hands. Poulenc wasn't known as a piano composer, and these pieces aren't terribly often played.
Gabriel Tacchino's fastidious recordings of Francis Poulenc's piano music date from 1966 to 1983 and have been issued several times on LP and CD, most notably and comprehensively on the 1988 double disc Oeuvres pour piano from EMI Music France. doubt due to the time constraints of a single disc. But there are two works not included on the 1988 set that almost compensate, the spiky Sonate pour piano à quatre mains and the jocular L'embarquement pour Cythère, brilliantly performed by Tacchino and Jacques Fevrier in 1972. Completists will find this budget CD worth having for these rare recordings, even though the rest of the selections are duplicated on the double disc.

The Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, FP 146, by Francis Poulenc is the last of his five concertos. Written in 1949 on commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, it has three movements and a duration of about 20 minutes

The Two-Piano Concerto (1932), one of Poulenc's most famous works, was recorded with the Monte Carlo orchestra and pianist Bernard Ringeissen in the mid-1980s. These three works are attractive and entertaining and are very much worth getting to know. The Aubade is a ballet about the goddess Diane written for a private party. Conductor Georges Pretre was closely associated with Poulenc and premiered several of the composer's works. Pianist Gabriel Tacchino is in the Aubade and the Piano Concerto, and he is joined by Bernard Ringeissen in the Two Piano Concerto. I have never heard better played or recorded performances of these pieces, although I am also very fond of Pretre's earlier recording of the 2-piano work with Jacques Fevrier and Poulenc himself on the keyboards (it's a bit slower than this later one, likely a concession to the composer's more limited digital abilities).
