Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 5 "Reformation". Andante - Allegro con fuoco. Kurt Masur, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Symphony No. 5 in D Major, Op. 107, 'Reformation': II. Allegro vivace. Symphony No. Orchestra: Gewandhaus Orchestra. Conductor: Kurt Masur. Composer: Felix Mendelssohn. Audio CD (June 20, 2006). This boxed set of the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Kurt Masur playing Mendelssohn's orchestral works is just breathtaking for the purity of the sound. The Gewandhaus Orchestra is famed for its "dark brass" timbre, but on this collection of recordings, Masur gets the strings to play beautifully as well. The symphonies are lovely and the inclusion of the entire Midsummer's Night Dream is a great addition. These are recordings you will listen to again and again. 1 in C minor, Op. 11, is a work by Felix Mendelssohn, which was completed on 31 March 1824, when the composer was only 15 years old. However, the autographed score was not published until 1831. The work was premièred at a private gathering on 14 November 1824 to honor his sister Fanny Mendelssohn's 19th birthday. Its public première occurred on 1 February 1827, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra performing under the leadership of its then-Kapellmeister Johann Philipp Christian Schulz.

Allegro con fuoco Symphony N., o. 07 'Reformation' 05. Andante - Allegro con fuoco 06. Allegro vivace 0.

135 years later, Kurt Masur became the orchestra’s Kapellmeister, remaining in the post for 26 years, so there is an indisputable seal of authenticity on these interpretations of the complete Mendelssohn Symphonies.
