Salif Keita is a singer hailing from Mali who was born on August 25th, 1949. Since his debut, he has become one of the most respected afro-pop singers of his generation, solidified by his nickname The Golden Voice Of Africa. Great art thrives under pressure, and as an albino born into Mandinka culture, pressure has followed Salif Keita wherever he's gone. For the rest of the 70's and the early 80's, Keita became something of a star while in the band, and in 1982 he decided to record and released his first genuine solo album. Ever since then, he's remained one of the most iconic names in African pop music, a star all over the world who's taken traditional Malian music, and combined it with influences cribbed from all forms of mainstream pop music as well.
Salif Keita's cover album 'Un autre blanc' DR. Podcast. Known as the "golden voice of Africa" he's also devoted much of his life to helping people who, like him, have albinism. His new album Un Autre Blanc - another white man - is released on 26 October on Naive records. After a 50-year career in music, he tells RFI it will be his last
Born in Mali and descended from a famous warrior king of the Manding Empire, Keita is an albino, which is still considered bad luck in many parts of Africa. He was ostracized from birth, and his childhood was marred by his father's oft-expressed revulsion. After epochal stints fronting bands like Rail Band and les Ambassadeurs, he moved to Paris during the mid-'80s.

Soro is the album that brought Salif Keita international stardom though he was already well-known in West Africa from his work with The Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs. Keita's voice is in peak form, soaring and swooping with awe-inspiring power. For these sessions, Keita has gathered an all-star band that is innovative, solid, and turn-on-a-dime tight. The production, state of the art in 1987, sounds just as bright and fresh today. This CD draws its strength from the rich traditions of Malian culture, melded with cutting edge musical technology, and a global outlook.
