After finishing their tour, the women of Warpaint took some time to pursue different projects: Jenny Lee Lindberg issued her solo debut, Right On!; Theresa Wayman founded BOSS with Hot Chip's Sarah Jones and All We Are's Guro Gikling; Stella Mozgawa played with Kurt Vile on tour and in the studio; and Emily Kokal collaborated with Paul Bergmann. When it was time to reunite, the band had months to make an album instead of the years it took to record Warpaint. Heads Up proves that the quick turnaround suits them; instead of seeming rushed, the album feels spontaneous and fearless
Heads Up, the band’s third full-length, probably won’t change whatever opinion you already have. When we last heard from Warpaint on their 2014 self-titled album, they were tucking the cerebral distance of post-rock into tight pop songs. But if that album staked out a middle ground between, say Tortoise and Broken Bells, Heads Up leans more heavily in a pop direction, veering ever closer to the tuneful but overly polite hum of acts like Coldplay. Warpaint have recently name-dropped Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, OutKast, and Kendrick Lamar as influences on this new material
Warpaint toured the . and Europe in the spring and summer of 2011 to promote the album. They played at various major festivals including Summer Sundae, Bonnaroo, Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Rock Werchter, and Electric Picnic. The band toured in promotion of the album up to summer 2015, after which its members began separate projects. Kokal collaborated with folk musician Paul Bergmann, contributing vocals to Bergmann's extended play Romantic Thoughts (2015); Wayman formed a supergroup, BOSS, with Sarah Jones of Hot Chip and Guro Gikling of All We Are, and recorded material for a solo album; Mozgawa recorded with Andy Clockwise and Kurt Vile; and Lindberg released her debut solo album, Right. On! (2015), on which Mozgawa also performed drums.

The follow-up, Heads Up balances that downbeat vibe with more upbeat, poppy elements, creating a tension that's electric. I am still disappointed that Warpaint has yetVery solid album, despite it sounding the most different from what Warpaint is known for making. I am still disappointed that Warpaint has yet to write a true concept album; this is another series of songs that fit somewhat randomly together. There are more songs on this album I like individually than when compared with the self-titled LP "Warpaint" released back in 2014. They do not necessarily surpass their greatness as shown on, "The Fool," but at least match it, but in a different direction than we've heard before

Warpaint’s third album is aptly titled, given the startling outbreak of focus here. The first sign of Warpaint’s new cogency was last year’s non-album track, I’ll Start Believing – a post-punk screed more stark, direct and tuneful than a great deal of the band’s previous perambulations. Not everything on Heads Up is as forthcoming as New Song (Don’t Let Go is a case in point). But a few songs come close. So Good also fulfils the promise of its title, to another of Stella Mozgawa’s shimmering disco beats. The band – who write democratically – forgot to write a chorus ( Uh-huh, huh, uh-huh-huuuh-huh, it goes) but the melody lodges deep. An unexpected little stutter of keyboard (hell, call it a solo) near the five-minute mark completes the picture of a band sharpening up the details. Dre – named after the Compton Doctor – brings in a few R&B feints.
