The group was originally formed by French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo and lead singer Victor Willis following the release of the debut album Village People, which targeted disco's gay audience. The group's name refers to New York City's Greenwich Village, at the time known for its large gay population.
Village People is the self-titled debut album by Village People, released on July 11, 1977. Its hit song "San Francisco (You've Got Me)" was a top 50 hit in the UK, peaking at Village People. Village People was the creation of Jacques Morali, a French composer. He had written a few dance tunes when he was given a demo tape recorded by singer/actor Victor Willis. Morali approached Willis and told him, "I had a dream that you sang lead on my album and it went very, very big" The album was a success, and demand for live appearances soon followed.
The album, Village People, soared up the international dance charts. Soon, Dick Clark wanted to book the "group" to appear on his show American Bandstand - except there wasn't any group! Jacques, Henri and Victor quickly formed a group around Victor to perform for television and live appearances. Their second album, Macho Man, became a hit on both the dance and pop charts. Soon after, Victor exited Village People but not before co-writing Magic Night and Milk Shake for the motion picture Can’t Stop the Music. 40 years after it all began Victor’s back at the helm of Village People. The powerful and distinctive voice known the world over on iconic Village People hits has returned. Sometimes, you can go home again. Angel Morales (Native American) is no stranger to Village People fans.
