Mañana is also a re-imagination of source material; it's eight original songs that spin the Barcelona travelogue of Apropa't in a new direction. The first element one hears on Mañana is a cut-up, hiccuping vocal sample- an immediate indication that Herren is using the EP to inject his Prefuse 73 methodology into the Savath & Savalas sound. Though the track is titled "Interludio Inconcreto", it might as well be an overture for the half-hour of music to follow.

A follow-up EP to the well-received Apropa't LP of late spring, Mañana could well be accused of simply recycling tracks from the same sessions that produced its full-length companion. Certainly, it has little to compare with the best songs on Apropa't. Still, Scott Herren allows Mañana to be slightly more experimental and beat-oriented than the strictly folkie Apropa't. The sessions' roots in the Chicago post-rock of John McEntire come through much more clearly here, with parts of "Ya Estoy de Vuelta" and the instrumental "No Puedo de Cidir" having much.

Savath & Savalas – Manana. With this year’s second album under his Savath & Savalas identity, Scott Herren retreats gently back into a world of avant-garde glitch that previous LP Apropa’t seemed to have left behind. There, hooking up with Spanish vocalist Eva Puyuelo Muns, he concocted a delightfully lightweight world of summery Spanish psychedelica, but here he immerses himself in cut-and-paste trickery that overshadows the genuinely pretty nature of songs like Ya Estoy De Vuelta

Savath & Savalas - from the 2009 album La Llama on Stones Throw Records.

Savath & Savalas starts off the MANANA EP with the cut-up vocals reminiscent of Prefuse 73, but still with an ambient backing, rather than hip-hop. Things quickly return to normal (if normal is APROPA'T) with the slow, gorgeous "Sota L'Aigua. Dina Vinora" goes from abstract to concrete in one phrase, and has a thumping percussion that makes it stand out. "No Puedo De Cidir" also makes an impression, if only for its strange intro sample and lack of vocals.
