Felix Mendelssohn composed his Viola Sonata in C minor, MWV Q 14, when he was only 15 years old. The autograph score is dated 14 February 1824. The work was not published in Mendelssohn's lifetime - in fact not until 1966 - and it was not assigned an opus number. Although he did reuse one of the themes from the minuet movement in the equivalent movement of his First Symphony.

Mendelssohn: 3 Violin Sonatas; Viola Sonata. Sonata for viola & piano in C minor.
Both these and the three sonatas for cello and continuo are of the Corelli sonata da chiesa or church sonata type, with (for the most part) an introductory slow movement, a fugal Allegro, another slow movement, and a gracious dance finale. There is nothing particularly operatic about these movement structures, but what's interesting is how well Dantone's approach works with them anyhow.
A cello sonata is usually a sonata written for solo cello with piano accompaniment. The most famous Romantic-era cello sonatas are those written by Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven. Some of the earliest cello sonatas were written in the 18th century by Francesco Geminiani and Antonio Vivaldi. The following list contains cello sonatas with or without accompanying instruments.
