Santana formed in 1967 in San Francisco and was originally known as the Carlos Santana Blues Band. There’s still a lot of power to Santana, but it gets squandered pretty thoroughly on this album, as producer Val Garay shoehorns the band into a series of unflattering and ill-managed bids for mass-market acceptance. Garay has them trying everything, from the rap of Brotherhood to the Genesis-style pomp of How Long, but throughout, Santana exhibits more competence than enthusiasm. As it is, Beyond Appearances hardly bears consideration on any level. In This Article: Santana.

Garay co-wrote "Say It Again" ( Santana's final Hot 100 entry until "Smooth" in 1999 (a remake of Curtis Mayfield's "I'm The One Who Loves You" hit but this latest pop interpretation of the Santana sound did not endear it to fans, and, at a peak of Number 50, Beyond Appearances was the lowest.
