David’s generosity helped my mother and me survive': How Bowie saved Marc Bolan's son. By David Wigg Updated: 09:19 BST, 12 August 2011. With a purple feather boa draped around his neck, his eyes coated with mascara and his cheeks flecked with glitter, glam rocker Marc Bolan floated through the psychedelic Sixties and early Seventies like an exotic butterfly. He wore 6in platforms, and had a wardrobe of satin jackets in every vibrant colour from canary yellow to shocking pink, with crushed velvet trousers to match.
David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity (the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart). Space Oddity was the name used for CD releases of the album in 1984, 1990 and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues.
Unlike his good friend David Bowie, Marc had not learned the reinvention game very well. With the albums Bolan’s Zip Gun, Zinc Alloy, and Futuristic Dragon he’d dropped further and further on the charts to the point of nonexistence. In the last year of his life he released a final album, prophetically titled Dandy In The Underworld, that lly chronicled his fall from grace. 1) 3 days before his death Marc and David Bowie played together on Marc’s BBC series. During this performance the stage turned out to be too small for the two flamboyant performers. Marc got a little too close to the edge and fell over it, perhaps in a final sign that Bowie was destined to become the full legend in life that Marc would sadly never have the chance to be.
David Bowie and Marc Bolan. Never known for modesty, Marc said I picked The Damned to tour with me because I wanted to put the best of the established bands against the best of the new wave bands, so we’ll see who can out-punk the other every night (source: interview with Phillip Crawley published in The Journal, March 18, 1977). In another interview he claimed that he picked The Damned to tour with them because Captain Sensible had the good taste to wear a T Rex t-shirt. Pictured: Marc with Dave Vanian of The Damned, 1977.
