Junkyard is the third studio album by Australian post-punk group The Birthday Party. It has received critical acclaim. Junkyard was inspired by American Southern Gothic imagery, dealing with extreme subjects like an evangelist's murdered daughter. Nick Cave's then-girlfriend Anita Lane co-wrote with him on two songs, "Dead Joe" and "Kiss me Black".
The Birthday Party was the first album by The Idle Race, a psychedelic pop band, released in 1968 (see 1968 in music). This quasi-concept album was the first to be composed almost entirely of songs by a young Birmingham guitarist/singer named Jeff Lynne. The LP came in a gatefold sleeve, the first of its kind since the Beatles' Sgt Pepper and the Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request albums.
The Birthday Party (originally known as The Boys Next Door) were an Australian post-punk band, active from 1978 to 1983. Despite limited commercial success, The Birthday Party's influence has been far-reaching, and they have been called "one of the darkest and most challenging post-punk groups to emerge in the early '80s.

This is The Birthday Party in full flight at The Venue in London in August 1982 and within a year the group will cease to exist. Blazing hard and blindingly bright, The Birthday Party were a magnesium strip of rock & roll intensity destined to burn out rather than hang around for the long haul and in Junkyard the band achieved its high watermark as a quintet. Released in May 1982, Junkyard’s uncompromising contents signalled both the oncoming demise of the band responsible for them and rock & roll’s logical conclusion

Jack Met (vocals/guitar), is the lead vocalist who splits time between the band and attending Columbia. AJR began in 2005, busking on the streets and in the parks of New York. The released of January single 100 Bad Days hinted at a new album for AJR, with the following single Birthday Party announcing Neotheater, released on April 26, 2019.
Their jaundiced cabaret sound as a band has similarities to Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band in the way that they seem to be swinging in and out of tempo, lurching from one twanging blues passage to another with blinding, furious noise squalls. Mr. Clarinet," "Hats on Wrong," "The Hair Shirt," and "Guilt Parade" display some of Nick Cave's darkest lyrical content, attesting to the gothic tag later (unfittingly) thrown at the group. The Friend Catcher" is an utterly horrifying track, an album highlight.
