The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye is the debut studio album by Marvin Gaye, released in 1961, and the second long-playing album (TM-221) released by Motown We're The Miracles (TM-220). It is most notable as the album that caused the first known struggle of Gaye's turbulent tenure with the label. Between his release from the . Air Force in 1957 and signing with Motown Records's Tamla label in 1961, Marvin Gaye was struggling to find his identity in the music business.

That in the years after the release of this album Marvin Gaye became one of the greatest and most influential singers in the fields of soul and R&B is hardly a matter for discussion. What kind of impression the listening public might have picked up from Soulful Moods, his debut recording project, is another question, as it is certainly an uncharacteristic collection

The jazzy album was a failure, and the next year Gaye decided to conform to R&B, where he would find his calling. Gaye's love for jazz would never go away though, he always longed to be a jazz crooner. He recorded several jazz albums through the 60's, but none were very successful and were overshadowed by his R&B hits
