Codona is the first album by the jazz trio Codona which featured sitarist and tabla player Collin Walcott, trumpeter Don Cherry and percussionist Naná Vasconcelos recorded in 1978 and released on the ECM label. All compositions by Collin Walcott except as indicated. Like That of Sky" - 11:07. Codona" (Cherry, Vasconcelos, Walcott) - 6:14.
Whereas the debut CODONA album kind of had a logic to where they were coming from, this second album throws you for a loop. It's not that it's ridiculously lost in the clouds and creates a whole new musical experience, it's just that the melodies are more intricate and subtle and there are more liberties in the individual instruments creating separate and distinct roles which don't immediately sound pleasant and even ring a little dissonant at times.
Codona 2 is the second album by the jazz trio Codona which featured sitarist and tabla player Collin Walcott, trumpeter Don Cherry and percussionist Naná Vasconcelos recorded in 1980 and released on the ECM label. Codona 2. Studio album by. Collin Walcott, Don Cherry & Naná Vasconcelos.
CODONA 2, released in 1980, was the second of their three albums for the ECM label, and it's worth pointing out that the entire trilogy can now be had in ECM's The Codona Trilogy box set. One of the unusual aspects of Codona's work within the ECM fold is that these three musicians exploited overdubbing to create thicker textures. In the second track, "Godumaduma", Walcott performs alone, the music consisting of two string lines double-tracked. On "Malinye", Cherry initially plays his horn while Walcott beats a timpani and Vasconcelos sings, the proceedings rooted in a folk music refrain. However, this track, 12 minutes long, eventually transforms into a free-jazz free-for-all with wordless shouting from the player and unstructured drumbeats, and then ends with minimalism of the Steve Reich sort.
