Tommy is a 1972 album, based on the original 1969 album by The Who, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Measham, of arrangements by Wil Malone. The project was conceived by Lou Reizner, initially with Rod Stewart singing Roger Daltrey's main role. As Pete Townshend and Daltrey became more involved, Stewart's role was reduced to singing "Pinball Wizard".

The London Symphony Chorus and Orchestra perform beautifully for Antonio Pappano, who achieves a naturally expressive ebb and flow without distorted exaggeration. The two starry soloists have less to do, with Thomas Hampson's contributions coming near the end. In the 'Gratias agimus', Roberto Alagna sounds clangorous and tight-throated in alt, though he settles down somewhat in the 'Et incarnatus'. The London Symphony Chorus does a splendid job. Roberto Alagna and Thomas Hampson also do fine work in their solos and the 'Agnus Dei' duet, Alagna's melancholy heroism contrasting with Hampson's sweet elegance. The main melody, however, is definitely Puccini.

The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), founded in 1904, is the oldest of London's symphony orchestras. It was set up by a group of players who left Henry Wood's Queen's Hall Orchestra because of a new rule requiring players to give the orchestra their exclusive services. The LSO itself later introduced a similar rule for its members. From the outset, the LSO was organised on co-operative lines, with all players sharing the profits at the end of each season. This practice continued for the orchestra's first four decades. Paint it black (The Rolling Stones) 21. Let it be (Beatles) 22. Black Magic Woman (Santana) 23. With or Without You (U2) 24.
