Inside the Making of ‘Sgt. In 1967, the Beatles were at a crossroads - they quit touring, experimented with drugs and set out to change rock & roll forever. Just the same, the pairing worked beautifully: The two songs were flip-sided memories – one haunted, the other wistful – of a time and place left behind, and for years a myth persisted that the Beatles had intended this new album as an autobiographical exploration of their postwar Liverpool youth. McCartney later disavowed the rumor: There wasn’t any conscious we’mber-our-childhood, he told Mojo in 1995. The album exemplifies that moment because Sgt. Pepper is also the story of the season in which the Beatles depicted a place they would not go beyond. Neither would anybody else.

Inside each side of the wallet were other surprises, a card featuring various cut-outs and in the initial pressings at least, the paper inner sleeve bore a psychedelic design. In the Britain the album hit number and between June, 1967 and February, 1968 spent a total of 27 weeks at the top during an initial chart run of 148 weeks. Pepper' is Paul's baby from start-to-finish. It is a masterpiece, just a lesser one in comparison to the Beatles' other masterpieces (again, just my take on it). Two more big plusses: Ringo gives us his all-time best Beatles vocal performance on "With a Little Help from My Friends", and that final, smashing E piano chord will still send shivers up your spine. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by English rock band The Beatles.

On 1 June 1967, The Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, their eighth studio album and perhaps their most iconic. Sgt. Pepper, Paul McCartney’s original concept made real by pop artist Peter Blake and his wife Jann Haworth, went on to win a Grammy for Best Album Cover. It cost almost 50 times more to create the cover than that of a regular LP at the time. On its 50th anniversary we look at the making of this ground-breaking album by one of the most famous and critically acclaimed rock bands of all time.

Pepper claimed Best Contemporary Album and Best Album of the Year, denying Frank Sinatra a third straight Album of the Year trophy in a sign of generational change in the music industry. Other artists: The Beatles received two incredibly flattering tributes from a pair of all-time greats. A mere two days after the album’s release, Jimi Hendrix covered the title track at a London gig. (He was unaware the crowd included Paul and George. There were decades in between, however, owing in large part to Wilson’s mental illness. His solo version of Smile wasn’t released until 2004, and the Beach Boy interpretation didn’t arrive until 2011. The backlash: Quite simply, a lot of people preferred (and still prefer) the earlier Beatles records. The songs were simpler, sure, but what was wrong with a great four-piece offering three minutes of pop perfection? Also, critics began to note that Sgt.
