Listeners who already know Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan from their recordings of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, violin concertos, cantatas, and Passions will know what to expect from their recording of Bach's overtures. For those listeners unfamiliar with Suzuki and the BCJ, what they can expect is bright, light, lively, and loving performances of superior virtuosity and impeccable lucidity. They can expect brilliant string playing, emphatic brass playing, impressive tympani playing, and, in the Third Suite, stunning flauto traverso playing. Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki.
Termed 'Ouvertures' by Bach himself, they were composed at different times during the composer's life, and never intended to be regarded as a set. With his use of the word ouverture, Bach signalled that these works were so-called overture suites in the French tradition, with the bourrées and gavottes that had become the greatest fashion all over Europe as a consequence of the glorious reign of Louis XIV in Versailles.

Newly performed and recorded by Bach Collegium Japan under the direction of Masaaki Suzuki, the Missae BWV 235 and 236 are here combined with four separate settings of the Sanctus. Two of these are original works, whereas BWV 241, and possibly also 240, is an arrangement of another composers setting. The 'KyrieChriste' BWV Anh 26 is an example of how Bach used music by other composers, in this case by his Neapolitan contemporary Francesco Durante. Bach Collegium Japan's deservedly acclaimed project to record all of Bach's cantatas has reached volume 51, which turns out to be an especially vibrant and generously filled collection of sacred occasional works. These sit outside the bulk of Bach's sacred cantatas, not part of the cycles for Sundays and feast days of the church year . The first cantata on the album, BWV 195, is a joyous trumpet-and-drums affair, written in the last years of Bach's life for what must have been particularly sumptuous wedding celebrations. The orchestra is one of Bach's biggest, including pairs of flutes and oboes as well as three trombones.
