Ace trumpet men Conte Candoli, based in California, and Philly-born Lee Morgan, then making his first impression on the jazz world, headline this 1957 session that grew out of a Charlie Persip gig at the legendary Pacific Coast club the Lighthouse. These two all-star groups belie the assumptions made at the time about the differences between the East and West Coast sounds (with underlining racial assumptions).

Tony Scott, Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino in Rome. Tony Scott, who settled in Eruope in 1970, was truly one of the most colorful musicians in jazz. Apparently, he organized this Rome concert with fellow Italian-Americans Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino. Sonny Clark Obscurities, cont’d: From Howard Rumsey’s liner notes to the album: Sonny Clark, pianist, is the junior member of the group, having just completed his first year. He is twenty-four years old, comes from Pittsburgh, and has already appeared in Europe with Buddy DeFranco.
