Steve Earle offers a reverent reading of one of Guy Clark’s most personal songs, The Randall Knife. The latest track off Earle’s upcoming Guy, a tribute album to the late songwriter, The Randall Knife tells the complicated relationship between a father and son. A track off Clark’s 1995 LP Dublin Blues, the song features a spoken-word delivery by Clark, who died in 2016. Earle speaks his way through his version too, a little gruffer and more ominous than Clark’s original, which unfolded like a campfire story.
Steve Earle will pay tribute to his songwriting mentor Guy Clark on his forthcoming tribute album with The Dukes, 'GUY. The 16-track collection was produced by Earle and finds him backed by Kelley Looney (bass), Chris Masterson (guitar), Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle/mandolin), Ricky Ray Jackson (pedal steel) and Brad Pemberton (drums/percussion). Here’s what Steve Earle had to say about the album in a statement: Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark were like Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg to me. When it comes to mentors, I’m glad I had both. If you asked Townes what it’s all about,.
Steve Earle was born as Stephen Fain Earle on January 17 1955 in Virginia but moved to Texas at a very young age. He’s an American singer-songwriter in the country, rock and folk genre. Earle has been married seven times and has three sons from three different woman. In 1986, Steve released his own studio album, Guitar Town, which had two songs that reached the singles Top Ten. He also released a compilation album of earlier recorded songs called Early Tracks and an album called Exit 0, which he released with The Dukes. In 1990, Steve released The Hard Way, which had a rougher sound. Because of Earle’s increased drug use, his recordlabel didn’t renew his contract and Steve didn’t record any music for several years.
The album was a significant departure from Earle's previous work, being the first wholly bluegrass album he had written. Earle made the album as a tribute to the founder of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, who had died in 1996. The album was nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award in the "Best Bluegrass Album" category (Earle's seventh Grammy nomination). Two tracks from the album were released as singles in the UK: "Dixieland" (distributed to radio only) and "The Mountain" (a commercial release).
The album drops March 29 on New West Records. Steve Earle Guy Clark. The album was a long-time coming. When Earle arrived in Nashville from San Antonio, Texas in the mid-‘70s, Clark, who passed away from cancer in 2016, largely functioned as a mentor and teacher for Earle, as well as other young songwriters of the day like Rodney Crowell. The record is a way for Earle to honor Clark’s tutelage. In 2009, Earle paid homage to another of his guiding lights, Townes Van Zandt, with a tribute album called TOWNES. No way I could get out of doing this record, Earle said in a press statement
