Song For is the debut album by American jazz saxophonist Joseph Jarman, recorded in 1966 and released on the Delmark label. Jarman's regular quintet with saxophonist Fred Anderson, trumpeter Billy Brimfield, bassist Charles Clark and drummer Thurman Barker was augmented for the record by another drummer, Steve McCall, and a new figure, pianist Christopher Gaddy, who had just returned from army service. Gaddy died on March 12, 1968, less than a month before his twenty-fifth birthday

After illness removed Christopher Gaddy from Joseph Jarman's quartet, Joseph carried on with the exciting rhythm team of Charles Clark and Thurman Barker. For concerts Joseph frequently invited guests as demonstrated by the addition of Sherri Scott for the first pieces on this CD. Gaddy's death prompted Joseph's composition Song For Christopher, based on incomplete notations by the pianist. What's so great about saxophonist Joseph Jarman is his sense of musical organization; there is an awesome patience to the procession of music here. Drummer Thurman Barker is listed as playing "all kinds of drums.

Alto saxophonist Joseph Jarman headed a sextet (with tenorist Fred Anderson, piano, trumpet, bass, drums) for one of the pioneering works of the AACM, Song For (october 1966). Its 14-minute Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City and 13-minute Song For were typical of the soundsculpting aesthetic that was being created. Jarman, who often employed multimedia presentations (particularly poetry and dance), based the former on a poem of his, and conceived the latter as an exploration of empty space.
I don't feel that I am a creator or a performer. The quartet of Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors Magoustous and Famoudou Don Moye played a few concerts in Europe and recorded the CD The Meeting for Pi Recordings. While they’ll play some West Coast dates this month, no New York appearances are scheduled as yet. "We've had such a good time with the events we've done that it just has to be," Jarman said.
