Much of the music one might compare to CFCF's debut album, Continent, leans on an external medium or function. Like a lush film score, theme for a forgotten Don Johnson TV pilot, or an unused in-house mixtape intended to fill intermission space, Continent at first seems like a throwback record that really opens up only in a specific time and place. And to a degree, that's to be expected coming from a self-professed film geek who is likely keener on the idea of chatting about Cronenberg than Kraftwerk.
Continent is a decidedly chill album. Some might say dangerously chill, as its lax attitude veers slightly toward the non-danceable, despite its steady bass and bright, consistently balearic feel. It’s a more mature danceable, though, really a wholly different kind of animal than the overtly poppy, frilly stuff that most young people put on when they feel like they’ve got body heat to burn. It’s as if CFCF managed to fit the feel of driving in a foreign sports car along a coastal road to your mistress’ Italian villa into 65 minutes of audio. Have hope, though; this is just the first CFCF album. Silver will probably have this whole thing worked out by the time Hemisphere rolls around.
Continent is the fourth studio album of the American band The Acacia Strain. This is the first album with bassist Jack Strong and second with drummer Kevin Boutot. Recording began on April 13, 2008 and it was released August 19, 2008 via Prosthetic Records. Frontman Vincent Bennett also spoke to MTV News about the release, saying it was the band's "darkest" effort to date. In 2018, the album was re-released on streaming services, featuring bonus tracks.
In fact, his first album, Continent, plays out like a Master's dissertation on the subject. The range of sounds and amount of styles Silver utilizes is quite impressive. There are aspects of mid-'90s Warp-style IDM, fragments of house music, rave, disco, and mildly funky pop that flow through the album like alternating currents. There are lush synths, rubbery basslines, tinkling pianos, 4/4 beats, drifting ambient waves, and peaceful melodies throughout, as well as the occasional screaming guitar line and laid-back vocal.
This album has an average beat per minute of 104 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 82/120 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page.
