The Yardbirds Greatest Hits is the first compilation album of songs recorded by the Yardbirds. It was released in the United States in March 1967 by Epic Records and included all six of the Yardbirds' American A-side singles up to that time, plus three B-sides and the live "Smokestack Lightning" from Having a Rave Up and Five Live Yardbirds. The album was the group's highest charting LP record in the US, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
The Yardbirds' Greatest Hits came about in the wake of the relative failure of the single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago," and Jeff Beck being fired from the lineup. The band's future seemed in doubt, and this collection was released only in the United States, where it was seen mostly as a cash-in effort by Epic Records. This humble release yielded unexpected dividends, however, as it climbed to number 28 on the . album charts, the group's highest-charting LP ever, and renewed interest in the band on the part of the label

Complete your The Yardbirds collection. Don't get me wrong: The Yardbirds are one of the greatest bands of all-time. But this album is an abomination, cutting seven songs down to 1:40. What idiot thought this crap up? Plus the sound quality is terrible. Reply Notify me Helpful.
The Yardbirds' storied history often overshadows the great music the band made during their five-year run. Like many of their British contemporaries, they started as a pure blues group, covering songs by the American legends they worshiped. But they maintained a not-so-secret weapon throughout their career: three great guitarists, starting with Eric Clapton, who got fed up with the Yardbirds' sporadic pop success and quit. After one album with the band, Page restructured them with a new singer, bass player and drummer and initially called them the New Yardbirds before settling on Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page took over the Yardbirds' guitar-god role on their final album, an occasionally unfocused psych-rock excursion that steers the band even further away from its blues roots.

The band had a string of hits throughout the mid-1960s, including " For Your Love ", " Heart Full of Soul ", " Shapes of Things " and " Over Under Sideways Down ". Originally a blues -based band noted for their signature "rave-up" instrumental breaks, the Yardbirds broadened their range into pop, pioneering psychedelic rock and early hard rock ; and contributed to many electric guitar innovations of the mid-1960s. After the tours with Williamson, the Yardbirds signed to EMI 's Columbia label in February 1964, and recorded more live tracks 20 March at the legendary Marquee Club in London. The resulting album of mostly American blues and R&B covers, Five Live Yardbirds, was released by Columbia nine months later, and it failed to enter the UK albums charts.
