Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, composer and actor. Hancock started his career with Donald Byrd. He shortly thereafter joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. In the 1970s, Hancock experimented with jazz fusion, funk, and electro styles.

As part of its then valuable two-fer LP reissue series, Blue Note's Herbie Hancock anthology concisely sums up his recordings for the label, drawing upon a dozen tracks over the span. Ranging from his first solo album Takin' Off to the sophisticated voicings of Speak Like a Child and The Prisoner, all seven Blue Note Hancock albums are at least touched upon, including several standards in the making ("Maiden Voyage," "Cantaloupe Island," "Speak Like a Child," and "Toys" but not, curiously and refreshingly, "Watermelon Man").

My sincere apologies to anyone who may have been inadvertently left out – Herbie Hancock. The Imagine Project won two Grammy Awards in 2010: ‘Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals’ and ‘Best Improvised Jazz Solo – A Change Is Gonna Come’

Pianist, keyboardist, and composer Herbie Hancock is one of the all-time jazz greats. Born in Chicago, Illinois on April 12, 1940, he began studying piano at the age of 7 and became interested in jazz during high school. In his college years, he was torn between a career in engineering and his love of music. Eventually opting for the latter, he somehow managed to integrate his interest in electronics, which he gradually included in his constantly evolving music styles. We celebrate his legacy with a top 10 list of his best albums. 10 – TAKIN’ OFF (1962) Takin’ Off is the sturdy hard-bop debut album by Hancock, recorded when he was only 22 years old. Released on Blue Note Records, it showcased his precocious skills as a musician, bandleader, and composer.
